Wall Shelves

Wall shelves are a great way to make use of all the extra space left over on the wall of a room. A wall shelf can be as simple and functional as a single well placed ledge or they can literally cover the entire wall. If the room is especially small then many wall shelves add worlds of storage. Otherwise shelves offer many benefits such as organization and design. It is not a good idea to simply put up a shelf or make use of an existing one and just expect it to look good. After the shelf itself is in place it still needs to be situated and decorated to truly look its best. Assorted items from La Vida such as basketwares, boxes, decorative items, framed pictures and pretty things will all make wall shelves look better.

Basketware

Baskets are a marvel of organization that have been tried and tested since prehistoric times. There are a few distinct categories of basketware that can be used for wall shelves. The large squarish baskets are excellent for storing large quantities of material while looking stylish as they are lined up on a shelf. Other baskets are more like trays or serving dishes because they display everything that is inside of them. These are suitable for organizing small objects on a low shelf or table top and also for floral arrangements or decorative displays. Baskets can also be divided by size; small, medium or large.

Boxes

Boxes come in many different sizes and styles.  Decorative boxes have the advantages of form and function. Not only do they look good but they also hold a lot of stuff inside of them and are great for stacking on top of one another. The notebook box is particularly good for a wall shelf because it resembles a book. When you are not filling a book with information then put trinkets and keepsakes inside of it! Other kinds of storage boxes come in three ascending sizes that can be arranged in many different ways in order to tie in together. Try stacking each one on top of another to build a tower.

Decorative Items

When designing wall shelves the decorative touches are really going to make it stand out from the other wall shelves. There are so many distinct styles of decorating that it is possible to design a unique wall shelf for every personality using decorative items. If there are too many books try breaking up the monotony with a series of well-placed vases, lanterns or candlesticks. Mementos such as these can be used in front of rows of volumes or stand alone on a shelf. For a library full of classic literature try a traditional look such as an urn. A more light-hearted shelf for a child might include a colourful sign.

Frames

Picture frames are a popular item to stand on a book shelf. These little windows may display the photograph of a treasured memory, a piece of artwork or even the reflective surface of a mirror. Appropriately sized picture frames in unique finishes can be lean up against a row of books on a shelf. Since they are so portable it is fairly easy to rearrange the picture frames in order to freshen up the look of the room. If family photos do not suit the theme of your particular shelf consider framing a piece of art or even a prized clipping. Mirrors also have frames and they make the room look bigger.

Pretty Things

Pretty things are similar to decorative items however they are decidedly more romantic in their appeal. Graceful touches like ceramic roses and doves in pale shades of crème and rose are a welcome addition to many wall shelves. Scented satchels can be hidden between the ornaments and books to make the room more inviting to all of the senses. By sprinkling tiny lifelike butterflies around the area it is possible to create a feeling of wonder and enchantment.  Even little touches such as book ends shaped like a bird or hanging ornaments that resemble butterflies can be considered pretty things.
