Furniture For Sitting Areas

Sitting areas are one of the most common ways of arranging furniture that can be used in any room. People like to sit down in situations that involve waiting for an extended period of time. They also enjoy a good sit when concentrating on a highly involved activity such as reading, writing or working on a computer. The simple joy of a beautifully decorated sitting area is one of life's greatest pleasures. This can usually be achieved with a chair or sofa, a handful of cushions, a table lamp and other decorative items. Seating areas can be used as part of a living room arrangement, reading areas, window seats, bedroom retreats and entry ways.

Living Rooms

Usually the front room is where most of the living is done in the house. The couch and the chairs are one of the most important parts in this space. Ordinarily there is a sofa flanked by one or more chairs and several accent tables. Common types of accent tables include the side table, coffee table and hallway table. Standing and table lights can provide a reassuring glow in the dead of night. Tables can be accessorized with decorative items such as baskets, candle holders and ceramics. Finally a large throw rug will really tie the whole seating area together.

Reading Areas

Reading areas are a sitting area that is specifically designed with poring over books in mind. If you love to read then a cosy reading area is the ideal luxury for the home or place of business. The two key pieces in a reading area are seating and light to read by. Rather than sitting on the floor an accent chair and a table lamp can be used. It is convenient to keep these things near a large book shelf full of volumes as one often sees such seating areas in libraries. To break up the monotony of row after row of books the shelves can be decorated with pretty things such as boxes, glassware and metal items.

Window Seats

Window seats are the type of sitting area that are often seen built into large bay windows. However if you are lacking enormous bay windows the next best thing would be a cushioned bench set up in front of a large window.  A cushioned seating area is more comfortable than bare wood or metal and encourages sitting for longer periods of time. It is a good idea to brighten up this area further with throw pillows and cushions. Many decorators suspend curtains to frame their windows but if the view is particularly fine then it is not a requirement. Another possibility for coverage would be blinds.

Bedroom Retreats

If there is enough room in addition to the bed and dresser then it can be nice to keep a small seating area in the bedroom. These sitting areas provide a private reprieve from the rest of the house where one can do things other than sleep. Depending on how large the space is there could be anything from a small accent chair to a seating area similar to what one would see in a living room. Using decorative touches this area can be designed with a specific theme in mind. Art work, picture frames and tin signs could all play a part here. Perhaps the sofa could be littered with cushions and decorative throws.

Entry Ways

Depending on the type of vestibule, the entry way may call for a seating area. This is especially true of places of business which need a lobby to receive guests who have appointments. At other times all we need is a place to rest while we remove muddy boots. An entry way seating area could be a simple chair or your typical sofa and chair combination. In the entry way at home there may be a cabinet or a narrow hallway table suitable for resting the baggage of the day upon. The office seating area could have any manner of accent tables again similar to what one would see in a living room.
