Furniture For Shared Living

Living in a shared community often means making the most of small living quarters. When the bathroom is out in the hall and the bedroom is also a living room and kitchenette there is not a lot of space to work with. A well designed dorm room should be as organised as it is bright and inviting. Obviously the fundamental aspect of dorm room decorating is organisation.  An organised room looks more attractive because it clears up the clutter. It is also more functional since everything has its own place which makes it easier to store many things. Dormitories can benefits from all sorts of homewares including shelving, basketware and boxes, furniture, artwork, and soft furnishings.

Wall Hangings

One way to maximize the use of a small room is by hanging up wall shelves. Wall units such as these vary from a simple ledge to complex affairs that cover up entire walls. Another way to use a wall to make the area look larger is with mirrors. Large mirrors come in many types of frames and automatically make the space seem twice as large to the human eye. Many students who live in a dormitory setting choose to adorn their walls with posters. This also adds a measure of additional depth to the room. However for a more refined look the posters and magazine clippings could be framed or pinned to a bulletin board.

Basketwares & Boxes

Basketware and decorative boxes are an excellent option for storage that also makes the room look better. Both can be lined on shelves to hold odds and ends, which gives the impression of a row or column of drawers. Boxes can be put in charming stacks on top of desks, shelves, or even the floor. Consider using boxes and baskets to categorize assorted objects in the home or office. For example instead of a sock drawer it is possible to use a largish basket or box that has been carefully stowed in the closet. Not only will it keep things in order but it also looks much nicer than a paper bag.

Furniture

Most dorm rooms are not large enough to accompany a lot of furniture. If it is not already included then most likely a bed, desk, and a mini fridge hot plate combo will be needed. There should be at least one chair for the desk and possibly another accent chair for studying or guests. Other kinds of furniture can be used for organization. If there is no closet then it may be necessary to acquire a side cabinet or dresser for storage. Even something such as a coat rack, umbrella stand, or wall hook can add tons of organization to a dorm room where clothes tend to pile up rapidly.

Artwork & Décor

The artwork and décor of any room is going to make it feel more like home. This concept is especially important for young people that may be living away from home for the first time. Oftentimes populated by hoards of young college students and studiers abroad, the artwork and décor for dormitories can be bolder than one would normally expect. This encompasses everything from brighter colours and edgier design schemes to outrageous posters hung on the wall. Take into account the intended occupant of the room and go from there. Candle holders, wind bells, and pretty glassware are all popular items.

Soft Furnishings

One of the most important elements of decorating are soft furnishings. Extra touches such as curtains on the windows or cushions and a nice throw blanket add instant appeal to a bare space. Decorative pillows can be easily displayed on a bed or accent chair. A matching throw or table runner will tie in with the cushions and dress up the furniture. They can also be suspended from the wall next to the tie dyed Bob Marley tapestry. Cover up the stark looking floor with a decorative rug that feels nice between the toes. Consider the available windows and decide on curtains be they transparent or opaque.
